Free Tax Prep Los Angeles is possible through the generous support of volunteers.



The IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is a rewarding experience and a wonderful way to give back to your community. For each hour a volunteer contributes - $1,800 in refunds are brought back to your community. With your support, we can help more households with free VITA services.



Volunteer Intake Specialist (Remote and In-person) - Assist taxpayers complete the Intake & Interview Sheet over-the-phone. 

  • These positions require the successful passing of both (1) Volunteer Standards of Conduct test and (2) Intake & Interview test.

  • Expect 2-6 hours of studying and completing both tests.  ​​

Volunteer Tax Preparer (Remote and In-person) - Prepare simple tax returns on the IRS's Tax Slayer Software.                

  • These positions require the successful passing of (1) Volunteer Standards of Conduct, (2) Intake/Interview tests, and (3) either Basic, Advance, Experienced Volunteer, or Circular 230 tests.

  • Expect 12-20 hours of studying and completing the tests.

All tests are self-paced and open book. Also, free tax preparation software is available to help you train.

What to Bring to Your Appointment

Gathering all your tax documents ensures an accurate return and fast refund.


It is required that you bring all the following tax-related documents to your tax appointment:

  • All taxpayers must be present with photo identification.

  • Social Security cards or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) letter for all the people you list on your tax return.

  • Copies of last year’s federal and state tax returns.

  • Birthdates for all the people you list on your return.

  • All income statements, such as Forms W-2 and 1099, Social Security and unemployment compensation, as well as other statements such as pensions, stocks, interest and any documents showing taxes withheld.

  • If you are self-employed or make cash, collect records of all your income and expenses.

  • If you received Advanced Child Tax Credit payments in 2021, bring IRS Letter 6419 Advanced Child Reconciliation form.

  • All records of other expenses such as tuition, student loan interest, mortgage interest, or real estate taxes on Form 1098.

  • If you purchased insurance coverage through Covered California, forms CA 3895 and 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement.

  • Bank routing numbers and account numbers to direct deposit any refund.
